Oct 7 was a magical night – the northern lights are in their 11 year cycle – which means that seeing the northern lights has come further south than normal – every 11 years northern lights are seen more often with large sun flares erupting. My app was saying the KP number was going to be a 7 or 8 (which is super high, especially for southern Ontario ). I have missed out on a few great nights in August and September. I was a bit sceptical to say the least but I got my settings on my camera and got outside – I went out early as the KP was about 4 and the probability of seeing them at 8pm was about 2(agin low) but as soon as I set up everything and looked up I say a purple glow and quickly put up my cell phone to the sky. Wow was I surprised – it was a clear start to the night and the colours were crazy vibrant – I started shooting both on my canon camera and cell phone – I could see white streaks in the sky so I knew that the northern lights were dancing above me – I was in awe – I slowed my shutter speed to around 20 seconds and was happy with he result. I stayed out until they slowly stared to fade and the fog rolled in – the first photo was taken around 8:15 and the second one around 8:30 – the sky dazzles and danced until 10 pm. A huge solar flare happened later that week and unfortunately I was away and was unable to get any photos – Keeping my fingers crossed for another great solar flare coming our way.

Have you been able to see the northern lights in your area lately with all these solar eruptions happening?? I hope so
